Letters of recommendation are required only for participants in the postdoctoral track of the Olympiad (at least two). However, it should be noted that they are requested from recommenders who are conducting scientific work in fields related to the Olympiad Profile chosen by the participant. Essentially, the letter of recommendation must be provided by the participant’s academic supervisor or another researcher who is familiar with the participant’s scientific work. The origin of the recommender's affiliation (i.e., whether they are employed by a Russian or foreign institution) is irrelevant.
For the other tracks of the Olympiad (the bachelor’s track, the master’s track, and the postgraduate track), recommendation letters are not included in the portfolio (the personal accounts of Olympiad participants for these tracks do not have a section for uploading recommendation letters); within these tracks, recommendation letters are not taken into account when evaluating the portfolio.

Rossotrudnichestvo considers the presence of a letter of support (or recommendation letter) for a quota as an individual achievement only for applicants to Master's and Post-Graduate studies (PhD).
For applicants to Bachelor’s and Specialist’s programs, recommendation letters from the Russian university are not taken into account*.

Academic leave is granted due to illness or family circumstances (illness of one of the parents).
